“Da droben am Berge” (also known as “Da droben vom Berge”) is a traditional Austrian Christmas carol, specifically originating from the Salzburg region. In English, the title is often translated as “Up on the Mountain” or “Away Upon the Mountain Top”. The song is a staple of Alpine folk culture. I dedicated this composition to Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, where I am the Director of Music, on the centenary of the laying of its cornerstone.

Description

Flute, French Horn, Strings, and Chimes

Translated to English, the original folk song lyrics are:

1. Up there on the mountain,
The cool wind blows,
There sits Mary,
And rocks her child.
She rocks it with her
Snow-white hand,
Therefore she needs
No ribbon to rock it.
|: Diri diri, hallelujah,
Hallelujah, hallelujah! :|

2. The little angels come
And watch over her,
And protect the slumbering
Child’s peaceful rest.
They bring him flowers
From Paradise,
That’s why the little child
Sleeps so sweetly and soundly.
|: Diri diri, hallelujah,
Hallelujah, hallelujah! :|

3. The child awakens,
She holds it up to heaven,
Then the angels sing,
Then the world sings:
Death is vanquished,
All suffering and woe,
Beloved, praised
Be God on high!
|: Diri diri, hallelujah,
Hallelujah, hallelujah! :|
