Noturno e Sereno
Duration: 6 min
This piece is a serene contemplation of the peacefulness of the night. The rhythm and later the use of the Mixolydian mode towards the end of the piece invoke the flavors of Brazilian music. I used to compose at my grandmother’s home at Flamengo Beach in Rio de Janeiro, where from the piano bench I could see the Sugar Loaf and other mountains across Guanabara Bay and over which the sunrise was always spectacular. This peaceful and dream-like refuge was the birthplace of most of my Carioca compositions.
